Polar bodies are no longer needed for the embryo\u2019s further development; however, they contain genetic information that reflects the status of the oocyte. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-30e9060 u-container e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"30e9060\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-235d9c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"235d9c8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What can polar bodies be used for?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a2891b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4a2891b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Polar bodies and the DNA they contain can be isolated. DNA analysis allows conclusions to be drawn about the genetic information remaining in the oocyte that was passed on from the mother to the oocyte. This makes it possible to detect both mis-segregations of entire chromosomes or chromosome segments during the first and second meiotic divisions, as well as gene mutations that have previously been identified in the mother.     <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7829522 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7829522\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When can polar body analysis be performed?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ee6372 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ee6372\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Polar body analysis is only possible in the context of assisted reproduction (IVF) when IVF is performed using ICSI (<u>I<\/u>ntra<u>c<\/u>ytoplasmic <u>S<\/u>perm <u>i<\/u>njection). In contrast to preimplantation genetic testing on trophectoderm cells (cells of the embryo), polar body diagnostics are generally permitted by law in Austria and may be performed in any laboratory authorised for this purpose. <\/p><p>Which laboratories in Austria are authorised to perform this can be checked in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbrauchergesundheit.gv.at\/gentechnik\/rechtoe\/GTG\/Genregister.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.verbrauchergesundheit.gv.at\/gentechnik\/rechtoe\/GTG\/Genregister.html\">Genetic Analysis Register<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-184569c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"184569c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can all genetic changes be detected by polar body diagnostics?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1aaa50a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1aaa50a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>No\u2014polar body diagnostics can generally only detect changes that originate from the mother. For chromosomal mis-segregations such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), however, this accounts for the vast majority, and only 2\u20138% of these deviations originate from the father. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d62b3ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d62b3ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When is polar body diagnostics useful with regard to chromosomal mis-segregations?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7293610 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7293610\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Chromosomal mis-segregations can also occur in young women; however, the risk increases significantly with age. The following graphic shows that, as the patient\u2019s age increases, the proportion of euploid oocytes (oocytes with the correct number of chromosomes) decreases. Statistically, in a 39-year-old woman, only one out of three oocytes has a normal chromosome set, while the other two show chromosomal mis-segregations. The proportion of euploid oocytes decreases continuously with increasing age. A pregnancy resulting from fertilisation of an aneuploid oocyte can lead to miscarriage, implantation failure (failure of the embryo to implant) or, in some cases, the birth of a child with severe health impairments.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09d294e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"09d294e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How does polar body diagnostics work?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-611d010 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"611d010\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The polar bodies are removed at the reproductive centre as part of IVF treatment and sent to our laboratory under cooled conditions. As polar bodies contain extremely little genetic material (three haploid genomes), the amount of DNA must first be amplified. This is done using so-called whole genome amplification (WGA). After successful WGA, the polar body DNA can be analysed for gains or losses of entire chromosomes or chromosome segments. The reproductive centre is informed of the result once the analysis has been completed.    <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element
