Genetic counselling
Genetic counselling is a confidential conversation that helps individuals seeking advice understand potential genetic risks, causes and options for action, and make an informed decision.
Based on our many years of experience in Austrian human genetics, we have an extensive network. If you have questions about genetic risks, possible examinations or the process of genetic counselling, we will be pleased to try to refer you to the right, competent contact person.
Why is genetic counselling important?
In the case of genetically caused or (co-)caused diseases, far-reaching questions may arise regarding risk assessment, prognosis, and prevention and treatment options. The Austrian Genetic Engineering Act (GTG) therefore stipulates that certain genetic tests must be preceded by genetic counselling.
The counselling is intended to provide individuals seeking advice with all the necessary information so that they can make informed decisions. This includes medical aspects as well as personal, family and psychosocial considerations.
Who provides the counselling?
Genetic counselling may be provided by a specialist in medical genetics or by a specialist in the relevant indication area.
What is the process of genetic counselling?
- Creating a family pedigree to identify possible genetic links
- Review of existing medical records and clarification of open questions
- If necessary, a physical examination for a more accurate assessment
- Clear explanation of the possibilities and limitations of genetic testing
- Decision support on whether genetic testing is appropriate
- Discussion of the results with an individual assessment of your genetic risk
- Discussion of possible implications for your health and family planning
- Space for personal questions and support with emotional or social aspects
- Written summary of the counselling for your records
