Genetic Examination Process

Here you will learn which steps are necessary to have a genetic examination performed at HLN-Genetik GmbH, from medical referral and sample collection to the communication of results.

Below you will find all important information regarding the process of a genetic examination at HLN-Genetik GmbH.
Please note that we operate purely as a referral laboratory and therefore cannot perform direct patient consultation, sample collection, or examination requests. As we are a private specialist laboratory, billing through health insurance is unfortunately not possible.

By law, all genetic examinations in Austria must be ordered by a physician.

PROCESS

STEP 1: Medical Referral

In Austria, genetic examinations may only be ordered by a physician. As we operate purely as a referral laboratory, we do not offer medical consultation, sample collection, or direct ordering ourselves. If you are already under the care of a physician, simply discuss the desired examination with them. They can commission it with us. If you do not yet have a treating physician, please contact a specialist with experience in the relevant indication area (e.g., human genetics, gynecology, oncology, pediatrics).

STEP 2: Genetic Counseling and Sample Collection

Before a genetic examination is performed, genetic counseling by the treating physician or a specialist is usually required. During this session, the medical question, potential consequences of the examination, and the informed consent form are discussed. The physician will complete all necessary documents with you, especially the application form and the informed consent. Sample collection (usually blood) is also performed by the treating physician or a care facility. Please note that HLN-Genetik GmbH does not offer genetic counseling or sample collection itself.

Here you will find all necessary documents.

STEP 3: Shipping to the Laboratory

The sample can either be sent to us by mail or delivered in person or by courier service on weekdays between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Please note: We can only process samples if all required and signed documents are included in full.

STEP 4: Laboratory Examination

After the sample arrives at the laboratory, analysis begins. Depending on the examination method, processing can take a few days to several weeks. Our specialists evaluate the results, interpret them, and prepare a written report.

STEP 5: Communication of Results

The completed report is sent directly to the referring physician. They will discuss the results with you in a personal consultation and clarify any further steps.
